So, here we are sitting in the Huntsman Cancer Hospital getting infused with Carboplatin again. We saw the doctor earlier. He reported on the CT scan we had on Monday. The pictures show that stability has been achieved, and he said that he could not be happier. Something about that he was hoping for just such results. There has been no growth to any of the tumors, and there are no new tumors anywhere. Not much shrinkage anywhere, but he said the he did not - could not - expect that. He said that stage 4 cancers like this do not go away, but if we can keep them stable, we have really achieved something. If we can maintain this, he is going to write this up in the medical journals, because this is the first time this combination of drugs has been used on this type of cancer.
Yesterday morning we got a call from some friends in Logan. They were in the area and could they come see us. When they arrived, Gary was shocked at my face; they did not know about the cancer. Gary is a doctor, whose practice was otolaryngology. When I said "mucoepidermoid carcinoma", he muttered something about that being probably the worst kind of cancer there is. He has been retired for a few years, so he was not familiar with everolimus or carboplatin, but was glad to hear that the drugs seemed to be working.
We have a new schedule now. The chemo has depleted my platelet count, so Dr. Grossmann has decided to do Carboplatin every other week (kind of), but keep the everolimus as before. He also worked the schedule around our planned cruise to Alaska and our three day camping trip to the Unitas.
So things are good. I am very grateful.
